Sea Lion (Eumetopias jubata)The Stellar and California Sea Lions are found throughout the west coast Pacific Ocean waters of British Columbia. The sea lions are excellent swimmers with large lung capacities which enables them to stay under water for an extended period of time. The sea lions enjoy sunbathing in the hot sun and when the weather kicks up a fuss they will slip into the water and wait till the stormy days pass. The young sea lions are born in June and by August are great swimmers and follow the adults out to the open waters. Sea lions will eat fish and often feed on the sea lamprey. Often considered a dumb creature, the sea lion is actually very intelligent and inquisitive, often approaching boats to investigate by popping their heads out of the water to take a look. |
